چکیده

This study explored how a HMD-experienced virtual environment influences physical balance of six balance-impaired adults 59-69 years-of-age, when compared to a control group of eight nonbalance-impaired adults, 18-28 years-of-age. The setup included a Microsoft Kinect and a selfcreated balance board controlling a skiing game. Two tests were conducted: full-vision versus blindfolded and HMD versus monitor display. Results were that five of the six balance-impaired adults and six of the eight non-balance-impaired adults showed higher degree of postural stability while using a monitor display. Conclusions are that HMD, used in this context, leads to postural instability.

Efficient Stereoscopic Rendering of Building Information Models (BIM)

This paper describes and investigates stereo instancing—a single-pass stereo rendering technique based on hardware-accelerated geometry instancing—for the purpose of rendering building information models (BIM) on modern head-mounted displays (HMD), such as the Oculus Rift. It is shown that the stereo instancing technique is very well suited for integration with query-based occlusion culling as ...

Vection and cybersickness generated by head-and-display motion in the Oculus Rift

Cybersickness is often experienced when viewing virtual environments through head-mounted displays (HMDs). This study examined whether vection (i.e., illusory self-motion) and mismatches between perceived and physical head motions contribute to such adverse experiences. Observers made oscillatory yaw head rotations while viewing stereoscopic optic flow through an Oculus Rift HMD. Vection and cy...

A multi-agent system based on Unity 4 for virtual perception and wayfinding

We developed a multi-agent system based on the game engine Unity 4 that allows simulating three-dimensional (3D) way-finding behavior of several hundreds of airport passengers on an average gaming PC. The agents dynamically check their surroundings for visible signs using 3D perception algorithms. Each sign is annotated with the direction of one or more exits and with metainformation such as it...

Head-Mounted Displays for HCI Validations While Driving

To provide reliable and valid findings when evaluating innovative in-car devices in the automotive context highly realistic driving environments are recommended. Nowadays, in-car devices are mostly evaluated due to driving simulator studies followed by real car driving experiments. Driving simulators are characterized by high internal validity, but weak regarding ecological validity. Real car d...
